I like that! I think it should be up to the blogger to know whether or not a gift will compromise his or her opinion. In this case it not up to the community or dictated by an organizational policy, i.e., the many policies governed by traditional media outlets. The blogosphere is different yet with passion and opinion still comes a responsiblity and credibility. Just by what I've seen from the many bloggers that I follow...I don't think they would want to let their communities down or lose credibility by not acting responsibly with respect to accepting gifts. But it must say something of the blogger's influence if he/she is offered gifts. Well, back to the topic, my position is that a blogger shouldn't ask for gifts. If he/she is a paid blogger, then I think the dynamics shift somewhat. But in the normal circumstances (if you can call it that), a blogger should just be expressing his/her opinion. Period. And even if a gift is offered, I feel it is up to the blogger to weigh the sensibility and weight of the situation and then make a choice. Will accepting the gift cause the blogger to feel obliged to have to pass favorable comments when it is contrary to the situation? If so, then I wouldn't take it, because my freedom to express what I want to express is the most important thing to have. Plus one's reputation as a blogger. So, in a word or two (maybe a few...), dun ask for gifts; and even if offered one, think thrice before accepting it.
