Mike, the best social networking goes from the virtual to physical/offline interactions. We have to learn to maximize relationships in our web communities and grow our human networks to make them truly social and not anti-social. Face to face is key and very much a real opportunity for web groups. Many online communities are organizing meetups, i.e., on twitter they are called tweetups. Thanks for commenting.

Social networking is antisocial.

Good for businesses perhaps, but it is the death of face to face socialising.

Hi Deborah, I'm sorry that you missed the event too, but hopefully you will catch the next one. I agree with you that small businesses definitely need more education on social media to calm their fears and to get them headed in the right direction. I do see how they could be misguided and unclear as to why FB, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, etc., would be valuable to their businesses. I always try to take 10 steps back to tell a small business owner that it's so important to listen first in a social networking community, to see if it even makes sense for them to be there. It will take time, but I know that we'll get there. Thanks for commenting!!

Sorry I missed your event. What a great group of presenters.

Your discovery is not surprising to me at all. I have started consulting small businesses on Social Media Marketing and I know the kind of hand holding it requires. I've learned to stop using descriptions like "Micro Blogging" (way too intimidating) and replace them with phrases like "One Big Rolodex." This kind of comparison works very well with those who are clueless when it comes to Twitter and Facebook. In addition to the complete lack of knowledge, there is also a lot of fear and misguided preconceived notions about Social Media that must be addressed.
