New PR Vocabulary
My daughter gets a vocabulary quiz every week in her English class. I vaguely remember having the same quizzes when I was her age. I think that communications professionals need a series of weekly quizzes to keep us all on our toes, up to date on social media and new technology, and to keep us “in the know” so we can properly advise our clients.
When I wrote The New PR Toolkit back in 2003, I discussed “new” vocabulary that included words such as:
- Hits
- Spam
- Firewalls
- JPEGs
- URL
- HTML
Yesterday’s “new” vocabulary is commonplace today. Then along came PR 2.0: New Media, New Tools, New Audiences in 2008 and I updated the language to incorporate Social Media terms including:
- Micromedia
- Social networking
- RSS
- Podcasting
- Vlogs
- Bookmarking
- Wiki
Now these words have become everyday language. The technology is rapidly changing. In order for us to remain current and advise our clients on how to successfully navigate Web communities and engage in meaningful dialogue, we have to be 10 steps ahead. Here are some terms that I thought were interesting and would keep you ahead of the curve. Test your knowledge to see how many you know:
- Media Snackers
- Mashup
- Plugoo
- SNF
- Semantic Web
- Conversation Index
- Lifestreams
- Livecasting
- SERPs
