Early in my career, a supervisor strongly suggested that I choose a specialty to focus on. I respectfully told him that I wanted to remain a generalist – since that was part of the appeal of choosing a career in PR – the diversity. Today, 22 years later, I have no regrets. I have had the privilege of working in a variety of sectors from hospitality, wine and food to government and not-for-profit. I believe that these experiences help make me a better practitioner, with broad business perspective, drawing on ‘best in class’ solutions.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Danielle. I consider myself a PR generalist too, although I’ve carved out certain niches or interest in healthcare, technology and education. No regrets 27 years later 🙂
